Workshop: What Should be on the ESG Agenda of Turkish Companies and Managers?
As Erdem & Erdem, we organized a workshop titled “What should be on the ESG Agenda of Turkish Companies and Managers?” on Monday, September 23, 2024, at our Istanbul office. In the workshop, which started with the opening speech of our Founder and Managing Partner Piraye Erdem, we discussed the obligations that ESG brings to companies as well as the opportunities that compliance with these criteria will provide.
The event, where the impacts and responsibilities of ESG criteria on companies were comprehensively evaluated, was moderated by Dr. Cem Veziroğlu, Assistant Professor of Commercial Law at Koç University and Affiliated Scholar at UNESCO Chair for Gender Equality and Sustainable Development. Among the speakers were Gülşah Öztürk, Sustainability and Business Development Manager at Siemens Türkiye, Onur Baysal, Partner and our Capital Markets Leader at Erdem & Erdem, and Ecem Süsoy Uygun, Managing Associate at our Competition and Compliance Department.
Dr. Veziroğlu presented a conceptual framework of ESG. Referring to the global temperature increase and developments related to the climate crisis, he emphasized the international legal infrastructure. Ecem Süsoy Uygun then elaborated on the legal obligations that companies must comply with ESG criteria, especially CBAM and supply chain reporting. Onur Baysal talked about the positive contributions of ESG to the business world and stated that companies that comply with these principles gain advantages in sustainable financing and tenders. Gülşah Öztürk, from the perspective of a sustainability director, shared how ESG compliance processes are managed and the challenges that companies may face.
Legal counsels from various sectors as well as sustainability and investor relations managers attended the event, where current developments and future expectations on ESG compliance were also discussed.
